How to Advertise Indie Game?

So I know the normal things, social media and any other site you can think of, post like crazy, get comments, make friends, so on and so on.

However, the problem that I am running into is Facebook interest as well as the time element. It takes a long time to post on sites enough to get your game popular and even time to figure out how to get it popular on facebook. I have seen a lot of indie devs that have quite a few followers but no one is ever commenting or really caring about their product.

How do you get popular on facebook in particular and how do you get people to engage with your product?

Is facebook even worth the time or is it better to spend the time on other sites?

It depends, I would suggest to join game groups on facebook + join gaming websites like this forum etc.
Facebook is still good, the only thing you need is a game worth playing/buying. If the game is in development, you need a good trailer. People pay for this a lot.

Raztutu is right that you need to have a good product to begin with, without that you are sunk.

I think another one of the most important things is presenting your game in the right way. Study other games or anything that has gotten popular on Facebook or elsewhere and figure out what it was that made people interested in it. Asks friends or family why it stands out to them, if it does at all. Get a list of features or traits from content to color that might work and then start experimenting with them. Get a list of things to try to get people to engage (ask questions, share something controversial, bug people, make people happy, etc) and then try them and see if you can get them to work. The key to marketing is understanding your audience so study them and what they like.

I think facebook is definitely worth the time if you can make it work. If there is another option that is already working for you maybe put facebook on the back burner but if you can get it, almost everyone is on it so your exposure is insane.

Pretty much for any advertising is going to either take a lot of your time or your money to buy someone else's time. I would just take that into consideration but not necessarily let it stop you.
