Mega Man Legends No Spoilers Review – A Challenging World to Explore

I really feel Mega Man Legends (Rockman Dash) never got the hype it deserved, perhaps because people were expecting the platform style Mega Man games that were over exposed and often near impossible to win.  If not this, it’s because the game spawned perhaps the worst video game intro ever made.

In a nutshell, the goal of Megaman Legends is to explore the different ruins underground while travelling to different Islands and evading air pirates. (Steampunk style game)

  • Free to explore open world. (feels much like zelda)
  • Challenging and creative boss fights.
  • NPCs will always have something to say that will add to the story.
  • Discovering items in the dungeons(ruins) will allow you to create powerful weapons.
  • More to explore and accomplish after the main story is finished.
  • Lots of mini games that can be found by talking to NPCs
  • A sense of getting stronger and more powerful as you play.
  • Comical cut scenes (in a Loony Toons sort of way)

Mega Man Volnutt and Roll Casket, two 14 year olds on a journey to to discover the ultimate treasure of the world. Much like the anime One piece, this treasure is only rumored to exist and of course nobody knows just what it is. (well except for me of course)     The game really gives a sense of adventure and discovery, just make sure you save your cheat-books until the end for the full experience.

One thing most people will find difficult to get used to is using the L1 and R1 buttons to turn Mega Man while using the analog stick to move him around.   You can also jump with the x button, kick or fire your main weapon with the square key, fire a special weapon with triangle and open doors with circle.

You can only equip one special weapon at a time by talking to roll and equipping the weapon.  This makes battles difficult as your special weapons have limited energy, so you really have to make your shots count.   Being able to switch weapons during combat and having to strategically use all of them in boss battles would have given the battle system the variety it needs to get a better score.  Don’t let this deter you, the simple game-play is fun as it gives you a sense of mastery as you play forcing you to dodge things perfectly and upgrade your weapons to fit your unique play style.

Mega Man Legends 2 is a great addition to the series and I highly recommend getting it if you enjoyed the first Mega Man legends game.  For me, the world didn’t feel as mysterious as the first, like there was less to discover.   The boss battles are still challenging, however there wasn’t much new as far as game play.    I still really enjoyed playing the game as they greatly improved the graphics and continued the story line from the first game.
