Here at Kaidus we don’t care if Kingdom Hearts was once one of these games, we will simply embrace the good or bad in everything, and Kingdom Hearts has much to offer.

Lets get a quick breakdown of what you can expect playing Kingdom Hearts.

• Free to explore third person open world. (on par with Zelda)
• Challenging and creative boss fights. (quite challenging on hard mode)
• Rehash along side popular Disney stories and characters
• NPCs will always have something to say that will add to the story.
• Level up your character and equip items to become stronger.
• More to explore and accomplish after the main story is finished. (as well as a secret ending)
• Very challenging optional final boss
• A sense of getting stronger and more powerful as you play.
• Third person real time battle system with magical attacks and summoning
• Customize and create your own Gummy ship and use it to fly to different worlds.(much like legos)

Battle System

The battle system uses a 3rd person beat-em-up style where you move freely about the game.  Battles happen real time and do not portal you to a separate battle arena during fights.   The system is similar to the Zelda games. There are regular keyblade attacks, magic attacks, summoning spells, usable items and somewhat traditional Drive/Limit mode that powers up during fights and allows you to unleash powerful combos.

The game forces you to make your attacks count and can be very unforgiving of mistakes on hard mode.   By having a limited amount of moves  set to quick key commands,  you may develop a unique battle style that differs from player to player.  There really is a vast amount of attacks and spells to customize your character with, yet not so many where you are flooded with too many commands.

You can equip items in the game to help adjust to your fighting style. (For instance you can sacrifice your HP to deal more damage)

Kingdom Hearts 1, 2 and 2.8 use the more traditional style battle system as described above,  however the others introduce a command deck style.    While essentially they are all very similar, the command deck system allows attacks to level up by gaining command points from defeating enemies in battle.

Recommended Order to play

I also recommend playing these games in this order, however I feel you can mostly get away with plaing only Kingdom Hearts 1, 2 and birth by sleep.   There are two HD Remixes that will allow you to get  the first 6 of these games.    (358/2 and recoded are movie only games)

Storyline.

I prefer doing so without giving away many spoilers, so I’ll keep this vague.

The root storyline of Kingdom hearts is a constant struggle between good and evil.  What makes the story more fun is all the bonds and friendship the main character Sora makes on his Journey and perhaps type of story where we have to ask ourselves to what end would we go for the ones we love.

Each game also covers different Disney worlds and usually drops your character in the middle of their classic tales.  (Aladdin, little mermaid, mulan..ect)

Graphics

The graphics for Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 would be considered some of the best graphics for the time when they were originally released back in 2002.     Since the release of the HD remix versions, the quality of these core games have increased drastically in resolution.    The side by side comparison below really shows the age of the original Kingdom Hearts.

Kingdom Hearts Chain of memories 2D GBA version and 3D PS2 or PS3 versions

Chain of memories was released for the Gameboy Advance that utilizes depth of field for a convincing 3D effect. (At least it used to be convincing)   This game probably has the worst graphics out of the series.    Later this game was re-released in full 3D for the ps2 and is title “Re: chain of memories”

In the latest kingdom hearts release we can see some major improvements to the visual quality of this game,   however by no means perfect.    I feel most will be more than satisfied with the improvements as we near the release of Kingdom hearts 3

Well Beyond good & Evil does have it’s fan base, some consider it their favorite game ever.

The idea behind our breakdown reviews is we split the game into graphics, gameplay and story so you can freely skip past spoilers,  first lets have a quick overview

• Free to explore open world. (Explore this world on a hovercraft or by walking)
• Challenging and creative boss fights. (usually you fight a giant boss after completing a dungeon)
• NPCs will always have something to say that will add to the story.
• Discovering items in the dungeons(ruins) will allow you to buy additional weapons and upgrades
• Lots of mini games that can be found by talking to NPCs
• Comical in game cut scenes (Less cinematic than most games, like Zelda)
• Lots of in game puzzles, many that focus around getting from A to B.

Gameplay

I really like how Beyond Good and Evil allows a bit of freedom in the game.   Sure like there is a sequential order to the main story-line, however the game doesn’t stop you from making pit stop pearl hunts or upgrades to your hovercraft.    These more slow events are nice when you’ve been breaking into an abandoned factory for the past two hours trying to save the world.

There are many mini games that break you away from the typical hack and slash games including boat races, futuristic air hockey and the 3 cup shuffle at the bar.

I personally prefer the third person camera in these games, however the game often switches to a locked camera in tight corridors that feels glitchy at times.

The game uses a multi character system where Double H and Pey’j will assist you as you play.   By pressing the E key you can utilize Pey’js Barranco D53 to move heavy obstacles, cut through fences or knock enemies into the air.

Battle System

Simple left click to perform a series of attacks with your Daï-jo (staff weapon) and right click to dodge.   By using the directional pad you can freely dodge attacks in any direction and perform backwards or frontwards attacks.   Later on you get a Gyrodisk launcher that you can use to attack enemies from a distance and activate switches.

Pey’js can use his Jet boots to fly in the air and smash into the ground knocking enemies into the air.   By using your staff at just the right time you can bat these immobile enemies into obstacles or other monsters

Hovercraft battles quite fun as the hovercraft is controlled in a third person style as well.   By collecting Pearls you can upgrade the firepower and speed of your hovercraft.

Most of the boss fights are slightly less creative than say the latest Zelda games.   Zelda bosses transform and get harder as their life depletes while most of the bosses in Beyond good and evil usually have just one trick to them.    They are rather ferocious and unforgiving and likely won’t fall with one attempt.

The final boss however feels like a good old fashioned Zelda boss.     Time everything perfect and make as few mistakes as possible if you want victory and enjoy the final cinematic.

Graphics

Released in 2004 the graphics of course show polygons, imperfections and at time a lack of detail.   Still Check out some of these screenshots from the PC release.

Story

Although a common plot setting of an Earth like planet at war for centuries with an alien race, Beyond Good and Evil does a great job at making this a minor point to the overall story.  The real joy is as you journey with Jade, meet friends, battle giant aliens and monsters and perhaps overthrow a government conspiracy.

The characters will talk on their own as you pass them so it’s important to listen as you walk by.    Pey’j and Agent Double HH will often say or do something ridiculous or unexpected that should have you laughing at least a few times in this game.

The story covers a wide range of emotion as Jade desperately attempts to put an end to the war.   Will she succeed?

The second installment to the series has been in production for the last ten years and at the moment has no plans to be cancelled.

What version of the game should you buy?

Beyond Good and Evil had a second release for the Xbox 360 and PS3 in full 60FPS and High resolution.     While the resolution alone makes a huge impact on the overall quality, the game doesn’t feel much more polished with these HD releases.      These releases are available for direct download on the PS3 and Xbox 360

The PC release of this games in my opinion doesn’t look any different than these HD releases and is typically the cheapest option for getting the game.

• Puzzles and other challenging obstacles.
• Unique graphics that feel like a painting
• Interactive environment and NPC’s
• Fun, humorous, and heartwarming story.

One thing I have to get off my chest is I can’t stand the graphics, the cell shaded look is killing it for me to the point that I’m stressed out and bothered from just seeing a photo of the game.    Don’t let that stop you, most people will tell you this game has the best graphics you will ever see!    It really needs to be taken from the perspective of a painting to be enjoyed.  Love or hate, the graphics are at times beautiful and creative as they interact and transform to fit the storyline.

Most people will consider this game very similar to Zelda.   The most similar aspects are Issun, the wandering bug pervert who likes to take naps(Hey Listen) in Sakuya (fairy) the wood sprites clothing.   The characters in general seem to have the same humorous style and annoyances as the Legend of Zelda.    While it is most similar to Twilight princess, this game is by no means a clone of zelda.   The battle system itself is the most different as you use the wii remote to perform attacks, cut through obstacles and repair broken objects and scenery.   That said, there is still a magical creature that goes around filling pots and vases with coins and hides treasure chests in wide open fields. (must be nice)

If you have the option to get this game, I highly suggest getting the game for the Nintendo Wii as most players will find it annoying to draw on the screen with the joystick. Drawing on the screen is a repetitive and occasionally annoying task that occurs over and over that feels like a six’s sense on the wii remote. (that said, I have had some people say they hate the wii controls and only love the PS2 / PS3 controls)
