PlayStation’s ‘Big in Japan’ event had me drowning in collection of cheap anime games for ps4. Here is a list of best Japanese style games that have a kick ass anime series or just boss anime graphics.

J-stars Victory VS+

Enjoy the ultimate beat them up game for fans of the Weekly Shonen Comic Manga. J-stars lets up to four player duke it out on a 3-D battle field as the most popular Shonen characters. With a plethora of manga characters that have made the leap over to anime such as :- Assassin Classroom, Bleach, Beelzebub, Dragon Ball, Fist of the North Star, Gintama, Hunter x Hunter, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Naruto, One Piece, Reborn!, Rurouni Keshin, Saint Seiya, Toriko and Yu Yu Haksho. It’s like the ultimate anime beat them. There are also characters from popular manga stories that haven’t made been made into an animated series yet.

There is three main story mode that follows popular manga characters that team up to explore this shared universe.

If you’ve ever wondered who’d win a fight between Luffy, Goku, Ichigo and Naruto this game is how you find out.

Sword Art Online: Infinity Moment/ Hollow Fragment /Lost Song/ Hollow Realization

If you are unfamiliar with the Sword Art Online Series, it is an anime series that follows an online game that go terribly wrong. The game’s creator decides to troll his players by hiding the log-out button trapping them in the virtual world. Death within the games also means death in the real world. It is based off an amazing light novel series I highly recommend as it is more expansive than the SAO animation. Sword Art Online light novels by Reki Kawhara contain whole arcs and events the anime skipped over spread throughout the volumes. There is an amazing SAO abridged parody by Something Witty Entertainment that maybe slightly better than the original series.

These Sword Art Online games are a long series of games that develop in a parallel universe from the Sword Art Online anime and light novel universe. In this series timeline, the players of SAO are still stuck in Aincard after Kirito defeats Heathcliffe due to a bug. Hollow Fragment contains the previous game Infinity moment and includes a new higher hollow area you can teleport to. Lost song takes place in the Alfheim world and involves aerial combat, whereas Hollow Realization returns you to an open world, not level based Aincard.

SAO games are action – based RPG’s that allows the player to gain a lot of different sword arts in a lot of different equipment styles. There are loads of areas to explore, an endless list of in game achievements to complete to unlock new skills, and lots of support characters from the anime to adventure with and romance. The combat is fast, and addictive – though the cut scenes can be excessive.

Now all we need is a game made on Gun Gale Online from SAO.

Attack on Titian: Wings of Freedom

If you are unfamiliar with the anime-series it is set in a dystopian world where humanity is beset by giants that enjoy nothing better than biting humans in two. To prevent the encroaching giants from feasting on the whole of humanity walls are erected, and new style of combat is adopted to combat the giants through swords and a grappling hook system. Think a drunk spider-man with big swords. The giants smash down the wall and chaos ensues.

AOT follows the anime canon pretty closely and as such it is a great game to pick up if you are a fan of the Attack On Titan series of anime. All the events take place in Season One of Attack on Titan. It’s a hack and slash that allows you to fight in the air and titian forms. The game can get a tad repetitive like all hack-and-slash games, but it is fun and must buy for fans.

You can play as all your favorite anime characters who all have slightly different play styles.

Accel World Vs Sword Art Online

This is another cross over franchise between two light novel series revolving around online games and were later developed into anime series. It’s an action RPG that see Kiritio from SAO venturing into the gaming world of Accel world to challenge the seven kings of color to find his A.I daughter Yui. This game takes place in the Alfheim saga of Sword Art Online which plays well with the Accel World Burst system.

Accel World takes place in cyber-punk future where humanity implants technology into their body. An underground game fighting game is being played. Winning points in the game gives the player greater abilities in reality.

The game allows you to play as key characters from both franchises and the cross-over story is done extremely well. Although Accel World only had one series and a subsequent movie the characters in are extremely interesting and it’s well worth a watch.

Fate / Extella: The Umbral Star

Fate / Extella is an action based on the Fate / Stay Night visual novel which has spawned a plethora of anime series and movies dedicated to different paths and endings in the novel. I think Fate / stay night unlimited blade works is the best. The anime follows a group of magicians competing for the holy grail by summoning hero servants to fight for them. It has some nice twists. The franchise has several anime sequels, pre-quels and distant cousins such as Fate/Zero, and Fate/Kaleid liner Primsa Illya.

This game itself is set in an alternative timeline to the visual novel and follows on from a previous game for the PSP, Fate / Extra. I know, I’ve watch most of the anime series and even I get lost with the alternative paths. The game offers in-depth scenarios and characters from across all the light novels, anime series, manga and games of the sprawl franchise. The story is told through the eyes of three servants all of which have unique skills and abilities.

Arslan – The Warriors of Legend

Arslan follows a boy prince who loses his kingdom and his farther to battle against an theocratic state that likes to kill heathen cultures. The anime series follows Arslan’s struggle to rebuild an arm to free his country and reclaim his throne.

Arslan sticks close to the anime reboot of the novel and is muso style game that plays very much like an old school Dynasty Warriors title. Old school, as it subtler and not as over the top as the latest titles from the DW series. It’s a hack and slash game where you slash your way through literally hundreds of enemies to achieve victory.

Limited features and little replay value will let you purchase this game at a bargain. For the price it is well worth the invest to play, just don’t expect much. A definite must for both DW fans and Arslan fans.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 1 – 2

You have most probably heard of the Dragon Ball franchise of anime. If you haven’t it’s a series that centres around Son Goku and his friends as they search for the dragon balls and fight off evil doers with energy blasting martial art techniques. The one thing I never got is why they don’t simply wish for a mission or more readily magic device to bring people back from the dead…

The Dragon Ball Xenoverse series of games of fighting games are based off the Dragon Ball franchise of series. Rather than playing as an established character you take control of a time patrol whose race and appearance you can choose. Their mission is to protect and restore the true time line. There is a main story that you can follow to unlock character from the show, as well as their clothes and appearances. Each fight has different goals and hidden triggers to special events. As your complete fights and missions, you level up and spend more attribute points on your character.

The both games mostly extend from the Sayian Invasion arc to the Super Dragon Ball Gods of the Universe arc. Though the villains and mission in each game differs. The roster of playable characters is astounding and there are loads of side missions and an online mode to play.

If you are a Dragon Ball Z fan you might want to watch out for the release of Dragon Fighter Z later this year, a 2D fighter.

One Piece Burning Blood

The One Piece Anime follows Straw-hat Luffy on his quest to gain the One Piece and become the pirate king. Luffy has eaten a Gomu-Gomu devil-fruit that gives him the ability of a rubber-man that allows him to stretch and gives him immunity to blunt attacks.

It is a straight 3 versus 3 fighters where you assemble a three-man team from the 34 characters in the games roster. The game even includes Haki attacks, and transformation such as Luffy’s Gear Fourth.

The story mode is based in Marineford during the War of the Best (Or Paramount War). You can play through the battle in Story Mode and experience the war from four different perspectives – Akainu, Whitebeard, Luffy and Ace.

Saint Seiya : Soldier’s Soul

Saint Seiya is an anime series that follows guardians who draw the power of cosmo from constellations and clothes as they protect the goddess Athena from other Greek gods such as Hades or Pallas.

The game is a versus beat them up which has extended and improved up on the fighting systems of previous games to give it a quicker and more dramatic feeling to the combat. A lot of the combo’s connections and executions have been improved too.

The story mode for the game mainly takes place from the 12 Houses arc to the Hades Arc – there are also a splattering of what if scenarios, which are always fun to play through. A lot of fans of the series hail this as the best Saint Seiya game as it is faithful to the anime and improves dramatic on previous titles.

Jo Jo’s Bizarre Adventures: Eyes of Heaven

Jo Jo’s Bizarre Adventure is an anime series that stretches across generations of a single family – the Joestars. In the original two series, the Joestars battle vampires through a breathing technique called Hamon that allows them to focus energy. The latter series change the power to a technique known as Stands that allows users to summon spiritual entities.

This is a 2 on 2 fighting game that plays very similarly to Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm. The game takes place after the events of Stardust Crusaders. After Jotaro Kujo defeats Dio the heroes are attack by fallen comrades and go on a journey through time and space. As time travel is involved you get to play as character from the early eras of the anime as well as future characters.

There is an impressive amount of people on the roster and eight chapters of story mode to play through. There is an online battle mode it does have a tendency to lag.

Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 : Road to Boruto

Naruto follows the adventures of a hapless ninja on his quest to become the chief ninja of his village – the hokage. There are two anime series that follow his journey from a boy into the ultimate badass. Boruto is the third series in this universe but follows the adventures of Naruto’s son – Boruto.

This game is the fourth in the series and takes place during the fourth Shinobi World War. The allied Shinobi Force are battling against the mysterious Tobi and his forces. This is the final game in the ultimate ninja storm series and concludes the series with the resolution of the war and the start of Boruto’s journey.

The Road to Boruto includes all DLC for the Ultimate Ninja Storm 4. It is a fighting games the encapsulates the anime as it allows you to use chakra to climb walls and take battles to the side of the arenas.

If you want to try all four games Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Legacy is being released later this year and is a collection of all storm games.

God Eater 2: Rage Burst

The anime series God Eater was technically inspired by the game – and as such is kind of a cheat, but is an amazing series. When I first watched it, I wasn’t even aware it was a game. It’s set in a dystopian future where humans have been destroyed by monsters known as the Aragami. It follows a new recruit in an organisation that struggles against the creature’s incursions as society struggles to come up with a plan for survive.

Technically this game is two games in one, as it includes the original game – God Eater Resurrection, but also all the DLC of God Eater 2. As the game is often reduced it allows you to pick up tons of playable content for a very low price. It is an action-RPG that plays Monster Hunter or Devil May Cry. There are a range of weapons for you to master.

Danganronpga 1 / 2 Reload and Danganronpga Another Episode : Ultra Despair Girls

The anime was inspired by the game on this title too, but god what an amazing game series this is. It is like a fusion of Battle Royal, Saw, and Miss Marple. People are locked away in various locations by a sadist robotic bear, and are pressured into murdering each other. Unless the surviving members can figure out who the murder is they all die. If found out the murderer is executed in weird manners like having to ride a motorbike so fast they get turned into butter…. Erm yeah.

The characters are really well thought out, the game-play is fun, and the setting is as bizarre. The game gives rise to some really messed up situations too. It also has some of funkiest music I’ve ever heard in a game.

I think most of the anime adaptions are set between the games or offer pre-quel or sequel information about them, although there is an anime based off the first game.

Danganronpa v3: Killing Harmony will be released later this year.

Beserk and the Band of the Hawk

The Beserk anime follows the story of Guts, a warrior who wields an impossibly long sword. Even Cloud would feel some sword envy. He joins a group of mercenaries and recounts his growing connection to each member of the mercenary band before it is slowly torn apart by both internal and external struggles.

The game follows the Golden Age Arc of the Manga which recounts Guts intial meeting and joining of the band, and his connection to Griffiths. The game offers a very faithful reproduce of the original anime series, although issues of sexual abuse have been toned or cut out unlike the original man. It is a hack and slash Muso game like DW where one man destroys an army of thousand. You can play as a range of characters, each with their own play style and feel.

It is a great game for Beserk or DW fans alike.

Pyscho-Pass Mandatory Happiness

Pyscho-pass is set in the future where public sensors continuously monitor the emotional and mental states of individuals in society. This is used to give them a criminality score that predicts how likely they are to commit a crime. Threats are dealt with by a special group of police inspectors and criminal enforcers who use special weapons are deployed to prevent crime or disturbances to society. It is an amazing anime and concept.

Psycho-Pass: Mandatory Happiness is a visual novel video game. Control two characters as you explore the events from the first 12 episodes.

Conclusion

The list is seriously lacking a Bleach title for the PS4, although with the conclusion of the series maybe that is only to be expected. If you could make any anime / manga into a game what one would you do? Would you love to see a History’s Strongest Disciple Kenichi fighting game? A Hajime no Ippo boxer? Or a World Trigger RGP? Zombie-based tower defense games that are like Plants versus Zombies

If you have jumped across from the main article, you might want to skip to the third entry – copy and paste shenanigans.

I love zombies. There are a lot of people that love all things zombie. And as such there is an amazing amount of zombie related games that are just bizarre.

There are a lot of zombie tower defense games, and a huge amount of them have the zombies versus something like animals, wizards or even Spartans. So, there is a huge overlap of Zombies and Versus out there. However, these obvious clones tend to lack the humor and fun of Plants Versus Zombies. There are better tower defense games out there that offer something challenging and different.

Zombie City Defense Two

(iOS – Android -Steam)

Zombie City Defense is an in depth tactical tower defense organised around keeping a city safe from zombie infestation.

What it’s about:

There are numerous melee units you can deploy on the ground, turrets you can build, upgrades to building to create barricades and other things that will prevent the spread of the zombie infection. One of the greatest things about this game are the random events that work against you and are just outside of your control. I had a base that relied on fire based defenses to halt zombie incursions. In the midst of one such incursion there was a torrential down pour that literally dampened my defenses. Instead of burning them into nothingness – my city was overtaken by smoldering corpses.

You can research new units, and you can fully customize the map – by destroying anything on it if you have the right unit. Is there a bridge that is too convenient for the zombies to cross then blow it up, is there a building you just don’t like then demolish it.

It is a great tower defense game featuring zombies but it lacks the sense of fun and cartoon graphics of Plants Versus Zombies. It maybe a little too serious and in-depth in comparison.

Last Hope – Tower Defense

(iOS – Android – PC – Steam)

In Last Hope you join a war against the zombies in an open world environment. There are multiple heroes to choose from and a wide range of towers for you to build to protect yourself.

What it’s about:

Across the 140 levels you will face off not just against the zombie hordes, but other survivors who are have turned to raiding and pillaging to survive. The graphics are beautiful, but they are more realistic than Plants Versus Zombies. It is more reminiscent of the gritty survival horrors like The Walking Dead. Although that isn’t a bad thing in itself, it is when you compare it to the tone of Plants versus Zombies. The two are almost opposite tones.

The towers offer multiple expansion trees, you are able to customize your hero in a variety of ways to match your play style and you collect information on enemies encountered that will expose their weakness. There are numerous difficulty levels and multiple game modes for you to explore. It is a really fun game that has typical tower defense elements and is set amid a zombie outbreak. There is a very little humor and the plants are purely decorative which may leave it lacking.

Infectonator Survivors

(Web-based – Steam)

Infectonator is a bit of a hybrid game that has tower defense elements that is merged with RTS strategy and city management. The goal is to survive and find refuge in a world overtaken by zombies. I can’t help but think of it as Left 4 Dead for the Sega Megadrive.

What it’s about:

The characters act as the towers and their defense depends on the weapon they wield. Shotguns are effective in a short area, and do area damage, whereas rifles are better from afar and do concentrated damage on one target. So there is a strategic element to their placement and reloading of weapons. All levels are randomly generated and you have to scavenge for resources as you scout them. It operates a permadeath mechanic that may frustrate some people, particularly perfectionist. I’m one of those people who restarts a level of Fire Emblem every-time a random critical hit happens. I reset a lot. The worst thing is, starvation is as deadly as the zombies – so scavenging and resource management is as equally important as a good defense.

It is a deep, engaging and fun zombie game that offers additional challenges. For an indie entry it’s extremely polished and well made. It has the classic console style graphics, but there is blood. It may also be a little light on the zany humor.

Army of Darkness Defense

(iOS – Android)

Army of Darkness Defense is based off the cult classic and sure it may feature more skeletons then zombies (or in fact any.) Is it what happens when the undead craves calcium rather than brains? Okay, I am just deluding myself but as a fan of the Evil Dead series of films I was actually jumping up and down with joy when I discovered this game. I lead a very sad life.

What it’s about:

Army of Darkness Defense allows you to place archers and catapults to rain down destruction on the invading deadites, as you control Ash and his Boom-stick to prevent the undead invasion on the castle. There are numerous allies you can summon to help your defense and items you can use like the book of the dead.

I would recommend Army of Darkness to fans of the Evil Dead franchise, it nice and does have some humor that is related to that series. As a stand-alone game though it maybe a little lacking to be top tier. I found it fun and spent a few hours on it, but it is definitely not a must buy.

No Zombies, no Plants, humor built from an existing franchise and only touches on the tower defense elements. It’s definitely no Plants Versus Zombies.

Guns ‘n’ Glory : Zombies

(iOS and Android)

The Guns ‘n’ Glory franchise is pretty solid and robust series of tower defense games that extends across multiple settings – The Wild West, World War Two, a fantasy setting and even a zombie apocalypse.

What it’s about:

The zombie addition is a great entry into the tower defense genre featuring upgrade-able weaponry, relentless and frantic waves of zombies, and cartoon style graphics. The emphasis here is very much on people acting as towers rather than actual towers.

It’s a satisfying tower defense game that features zombies but it is nothing earth shattering. It doesn’t have the odd-ball comedy of plants versus zombies, and there is a severe lack of plant based activity unless you count the zombies who have a pumpkin for a head.

Conclusion

Although there are a lot of zombie based tower defense games, there seems to be a lack of overlap with the child friendly elements, the off the wall humor and plant based elements.

As such any zombie tower defense game I have come across has been lacking in some aspect and wouldn’t fit across all the outlined criteria. As such there is not one zombie game that can entirely replace Zombies versus Plants.

Funny tower defense games Like Plant Versus Zombies

If you came to the extended list from the main article, than please skip over the first two games. I was a big lazy pants and just copy and pasted them.

Plant versus Zombies has a unique and zany humor that is hard to replicate. I think there are very few tower defense games that come close to reaching the surreal style of humor present in the Plants Versus Zombies franchise.

This might be why very few tower defense game live up to its’ standard.

Here are some of the zaniest and funniest tower defense games I can find.

OTTTD

(iOS – Android – Steam)

OTTTD stands for over the top tower defense, and that is exactly what it is. Galactic peace has been achieved, and the coffers of mercenary groups are growing low – so they open a dimensional rift and go to war in another dimensions. And it is as insane as it sounds. It has some of the most incredible and memorable enemies to battle, such as a ghostly cactus.

What it’s about:

There are a number of hero classes you can choose from, multiple paths for the customization of the towers, there are loads of enemies to encounter and combat. So everything that you would expect from a typical defense tower. It also has a great story that is jam-packed with over the top spoof like humor.

The game has amusing features, it features dead plants that are close to being zombies, and it’s a tower defense. It sounds like it should be the perfect tower defense game for a Plants versus Zombie fan, but the humor does have a slightly different tone and the game-play does vary a little.

Jelly defense

(iOS – Android)

Jelly defense, much like Plants Versus Zombies, is a tower defense game that marches to the sound of its own beat. It is so unique it’s almost wrong to try and compare it to other tower defense games. Not because the tower defense elements are amazing, but because it is more a work of art than it is a game.

What it’s about:

The game is based on an alien planet full of jelly like creatures that come under-attack by an invading enemy force. You build towers to defend the Jelly population against the invading army. It may sound like a typical tower defense game, but the aesthetics is something else entirely. Words are unable describe it and only the screen-shots can do this beautifully render world justice.

You should see the cut scenes. They are jaw-dropping.

It is similar to Plants versus Zombies because it’s so very unique, and is almost incomparable to other tower defense games on the market. However, it has no plants or zombies within it, which might leave it lacking. And other than being beautiful it does little to give a unique playing style.

Bloons TD5

(iOS – Android)

Bloons is a tower defense that revolves around an unrelenting invasion of balloons, that can only be stopped by monkey kind.

What it’s about:

Monkey kind first tackle the problem of the invading balloon army through the use of blow darts and soon begin expanding their arsenal of tricks to deflate the army of unrelenting balloons through an increasingly zany array of towers – like blimps, helicopters and even super monkeys.

The game is goofy, has a lot of modes and content to play through, and it is fun to play through it. Not only is it funny, but it is a solid tower defense game.

It has some really good animations, is really bright and might be the kind of game children would really respond to.

It is a fun and funny tower defense that is very simple to play. It is the latest in a series of five. It lacks anything zombie related or plant based but it has humor and there is a versus element.

Tower Madness 2

(iOS – Android)

Tower Madness believes that the only thing preventing an alien invasion of Earth are militant sheep manning various gun turrets, and missile batteries.

It’s quite bah-my. Oh, come on, you’d think less of me if I didn’t for the obvious pun.

What it’s about:

Although the initial premise is kind of insane, I find the concept also kind of great. But madness kind of fails to deliver on the insanity angle.

It does turn out to be an amazing solid tower defense and one that is enjoyable and great to play. There is an extensive amount of content for you to play through with multiple modes of play and over seventy levels.

As it is a freemium game it is regularly updated with new maps and levels meaning the content is always expanding. It has to be noted that it does suffer from freemium devices though.

Again, there is a lack of plant and zombies in this game. And the humor doesn’t quite match up with Plants VS Zombies.

Conclusion

This section only has four games in it. That’s how hard it is to find a tower defense that is able to do the funny as well.

Toy Soldiers War Chest is a good fifth candidate but has been reviewed under console tower defenses.

If it is comedy that you’re looking for in a game, it may be best to try out some of these classics in other genres:

This section is for those of you who want to take Plants Versus Zombies into the next generation or don’t own a mobile phone.

You could be mobile phone Amish or have the long standing believe the pocket sized processors attached to a touch screen device will be the genesis of sky-net – and nobody wants to lose two hours of their life to yet another Terminator sequel.

This section will look at those tower defense games that are just too much for a mobile too handle, and will bring Plants Versus Zombies to the big screen. So, if it is simplicity your looking, this section is most probably not for you. In this section, there are less games to recommend when compared to the over-saturated mobile market. A next generation power-house of a tower defense game might be exactly what we need to fulfill that thrill.

Aegis of Earth : Protonovus Assault

(PS-VITA-PS3- PS4 – Steam)

Aegis of Earth is a manga style tower defense game with a literal twist.

What it’s about:

You are defending a futuristic and perfectly circular city from an invasion of rampaging monsters. The city is compromised of interlocking circles, on which you can build weapons or resource generators. You can rotate these circles to aim your weapons at the charging monsters and protect the city from harm. It must play havoc with the road system. Could you imagine popping to the shop to pick up a pint of milk to discover your home has been rotated to the other end of the city?! It’s a classic B movie of a game, that is cheap but extremely good fun to play. In its own right as a PS4 title it is mediocre at best, judged as a tower defense game it is top-tier. Maybe one of the best.

The assaults on your city can get very fast paced, and frantic. They also require you to think fast, and develop on the fly strategies. As twists on the tower defense genre go this is a solid gold one. The rotating city provides some really good and unique game-play as you are constantly refocusing your line of fire and questioning the optimum placement of the guns. There is a rich development system you can sink points into, with loads of customization options. There are also elements of city management where you have to manage power requirements and the happiness of the population.

The game does start off a little slow due to anime-style story. On the plus side, it comes with the original Japanese voice acting, so you can switch from the annoying Nickelodeon style English actors if you wish to. There are a lot of characters for you to get to know.

If you are considering buying it on Steam, read the reviews first. There has been some issues around the control system caused by a bad port – although this issue maybe fixed now. Although a top tier defense games, it is more complex than Plants Versus Zombies and its game-play is very different.

Space Run Galaxy

(PC – Steam)

Space Run Galaxy is a tower defense game set in the deep void of space. Your spaceship is the area you have to defend by building towers on it. In Space Run Galaxy, the objective is to deliver cargo to from point A to point B without having the pirates steal your cargo. The main objective is how fast you can deliver your cargo, without the pirates stealing it. Each mission has set three speed goals to beat that give you an additional reward. You will have to re-visit levels to beat the top speed goal with higher level equipment.

What it’s about:

Your ship is comprised of hexagons on which you can put different towers such as shields, thrusters, guns and the cargo that you are delivering. And as such it soon become extremely tactical where you are juggling defensive and offensive capabilities against the profitability of the mission. There are three main things to juggle, speed to meets the levels time targets, guns to deter the pirates and cargo amount to keep your business contacts happy. The ship has a wide range of customization, you can paint it, place more hexagon on it and by doing so redesign its shape.

The real fun thing about this game is that it has a crafting system for the towers. The crafting system is really deep in this game and allows you to build more hexagons or craft better towers. So, the more mission that you complete and the greater amount of material you gather the greater amount of towers you can build or upgrade.

It is a great and fun game. Even though it is a great defense game, with a nice story it plays nothing like Plants Versus Zombies.

Infinium strike

(Xbox One – PS4 – MAC- PC -Steam)

Infinium Strike is a deep space science fiction tower defense game that has real time strategy elements. It is similar to Aegis of Earth due to the fact that you are centered in the middle of the map and assaults can come from all 360 surrounding your ship. This game takes this to the next level though and it can produce some very tough, tactical battles.

What it’s about:

You are a gunnery officer on mankind’s last best hope for annihilating a mysterious corpse stealing aliens that are named the Wrog. (If only there was an n in there… How cool would be to have an alien race called the Wrong?)

Your ship is made from infinium a living metal and goes off to destroy the enemy…

It is a mission based campaign and it has all the hall marks of a traditional tower defense game, customization, upgrades, different abilities and a range of difficulties to play through.

The graphics are above average for a tower defense game, and the music fits the game extremely well.

The campaign is a little on the short side and will last a player a weekend or two.

It is a great tower defense game and fans of the genre will most probably find it extremely satisfying, but it isn’t a mind-blowing game that will be enjoyed by everyone.

Toy Soldiers and Toy Soldiers: War Chest

(Xbox One – Steam)

The Toy Soldiers series of tower Defense games are one of the most beautiful graphics wise. It is also one of the most novel and funny games. In this aspect, it may be the closest to Plants Versus Zombies, just because it has the surreal and funny craziness factor. There is an action element to this game, and you can control turrets.

What it’s about:

The first in the series was just based on green army and the kind of plastic soldiers you would play with as a child. It was a great idea that expanded into some of the greatest and most novel tower defense game-play. There are lots of DLC expansion which extend game play, like The Cold War expansion. The co-op in this game is absolutely amazing.

War Chest goes one step further and lets you play as some of your favorite toys franchises such as He-man, Gi-Joe, Cobra and Assassins Creed. Who wouldn’t want a He-man Tower Defense? There are even care bear clones running around. It’s just awesome. The downside is that some of the content is locked behind DLC. Personally, it was well worth the extra cash.

Its a fun and awesome game.

Deathtrap

(Steam – PC)

Deathtrap is another tower defense game with a slight difference. It borrows elements of an action-RPG too. This infusion gives it a unique blend of strategy and action.

In a lot of them like I, Zombie and Zombie Office Politics you can also play as a zombie.

What it’s about:

The game takes place in a strong hold that exists between this world and a world of monsters and horrors. You are tasked with defending the strong from an invading army of monsters to prevent them gaining entry into our world.

The towers are either traps and spells you place on the map which help destroy the invading army. There are loads of challenges hidden on the map to, you can meet neutral creatures which will give you powerful weaponry. There are also quests hidden throughout the levels. There is a lot of content to discover.

There is huge customization with over 150 trap upgrades, and three classes to play as.

Deathrap is a little darker than most of the other games on this list and may not be as child friendly, due to the blood and horror element.

Orcs Must Die 2 (Steam) is a game with a very similar set up and play style.

Conclusion

That covers most of the top PC and Console entries in the world of tower defense. There are other entries – Steam is full of indie entries in the genre and if you love tower defense I would highly recommend you looking through its catalog. With its regular sales indie titles rarely cost more than the spare change in your pocket. Other note-able entries you could take a look at are:-

Tower defense games that are like Plants Versus Zombies for Mobiles

If you have arrived here from the main article you may want to skip over this section. The introduction and the first two entries are a straight copy and paste, sorry.

One of the best things about Plants VS Zombies is that it can be played on your mobile without an internet connection. Has your boss dragged you in to do mandatory overtime? Fed up of putting covers on those TPS reports? Why not just whip out your phone and stop the apocalypse via photosynthesis? It’s what I do. There are loads of tower defense games that you can play anywhere without an internet connection, so these are the perfect games for long-flights or overnight spelunking expeditions. Or anywhere else you experience low reception.

Kingdom Rush Series

(iOS – Android – Web-based)

Kingdom Rush is one of the biggest tower defense franchises, and may actually be more synonymous with the genre than Plant Versus Zombies. Armour games have released three Kingdom Rush games: – Kingdom Rush (free for download), Kingdom Rush Frontiers and Kingdom Rush Origins. Origins seems to have the higher Google Play Score coming in at 4.8, whereas the other two are a measly 4.7.

Even though there is a distinct lack of plants and zombies, I personally love the Kingdom Rush Games. It maybe because I’m a big role-playing fantasy geek and these games are very much grounded in RPG fantasy . There is magic, there are elves, there are dwarves, there are orcs, and big bad monster bosses. And lots of things to level up. Heaven.

You are trying to defend your kingdom’s roads from an army of marauding monsters that are flagrantly disobeying the green-cross code by jay-walking into oncoming carts. They’re threatening your kingdom’s traffic management system and increasing the number of commuters petitioning local earls about road safety. How very dare they. They must die. And something has to be done about the monster problem too. I like to think of my king as a mad tyrant type. As the levels progress you are given new road systems to protect from new foes that may be resist to one type of tower, or move faster. These new locations and foes present an increasing need to develop new strategies to clear the level. These levels can be very challenging on times so you do need to think tactically about tower placement and upgrades.

The strategy is enhanced by the role-playing elements. You get to upgrade your towers through multiple paths that effect damage, area of attack and other things. You also have heroes that you can place on the map and customize through various means. These heroes and their abilities can be a life saver.

The games also has some truly epic boss fights that are highly enjoyable.

The games are so popular they have also spawned a lot of clones that are fun, but haven’t quite lived up to the original: –

Tiny Guardians

Is another fantasy-based tower defense game with a twist – it has no towers… It may seem like a total failure in generic concept and as if the developers have missed the point – it is a TOWER defense, but it actually works extremely well. It is what makes this game so special and separates it from the Kingdom Rush clones. Many quip that it is more of a master defense game.

Instead of building towers, your main character is centered in the road and summons guardians from cards. These summoned heroes act as the tower and protects you from swarms of enemies. The game features quests that allows you to buy more cards. There are a diverse range of cards to collect that contain a lot of different guardian classes. This allows for a versatile style of play, and there are a lot of strategies you could adopt to beat levels. This give it infinite replay value. There are also a variety of modes to play through.

There are over 40 enemy types as well as boss encounters that make it an interesting and challenging game to play.

It has quite a compelling story going on in the background – the quest to find a missing mentor told through cartoon graphic very similar to Plants VS Zombies. The artwork on the cards are particularly amazing.

Even though Tiny Guardians is available on Steam, as it’s a mobile port it does feel slightly lacking on that platform. It is a great mobile game though.

To my knowledge there are no similar games available on mobile platforms – although on Steam and PC you could try these: –

Tiny archers (iOS and Android) is another game that takes a unique slant on the tower defense genre if you are looking for something different. And Digfender is another weird entry (iOS and Android) that blends Digger and tower defense.

Sentinel 4 Dark Star

(iOS – Android – Steam)

The sentinel series is a science-fiction based tower defense game that revolves around an interstellar war. The latest installment takes place on an alien planet that is swarming with new enemies. You can make observations about the enemy forces in your bestiary which will give you the strengths and weaknesses of your new foes. These enemies have varied abilities that call for different tactics and towers to defend against.

There are 26 level (31 on Steam) that you fight across to earn upgrades and learn about the secrets of the Dark Star. It is very much this mystery that drives the story of the game forward. The also has a secondary campaign and an Endless mode after you’ve beat the main game.

The maps in Dark Star also continue across multiple screens giving it a more in-depth and tactical experience. There are a lot of tactics you can employ as well, such as calling in drones to strike the invading army, upgrading towers, placing defenders in their path or calling in orbital strikes.

You get to choose a commander at the start of the game too, which introduces an RPG element, as they will level up and gain more abilities with experience.

The Steam version has extended content and levels, and is not just a port of a mobile game.

Element TD

(iOS – Android -Steam)

Element TD is a direct homage, and faithful reproduction of the tower defense custom maps that were created in Warcraft 3. For nostalgia reasons alone Element is a great tower defense game that is well worth the low price tag. If your a game nut you have most probably already played a custom map version of this game somewhere as it tends to pop up as a mod.

It comes with a huge array of towers and defenses that change depending on the element you have selected to play. There are six elements in total. And towers are upgraded through collecting these elements by defeating monsters. There are five difficulties setting a huge array of tactics you can deploy to win.

However, Element has only got four maps from which to choose from – which kind of leaves it slightly lacking in content. It is acceptable given its low, low price and lack of in-game sales. It’s a good choice for true tower defense veterans and for nostalgia purposes, but it is a far cry from being an excellent game in its own right. I’m just hoping some of the Dota 2 maps make the leap in the future.

If you are into more classical tower defense games than the Field Runners (iOS -Android) series is highly recommended and so classic I should have done more of an overview. It is also a very highly recommended game.

Toy Defense

(iOS – Android)

The toy defense series are solid tower defense games that are free to download and play. The game setting is more of a historical military setting, the first being very reminiscent of World War One, and the Second more modern warfare field. Both games pull off the setting amazingly.

There are some unique quirks to this game, such as a fast forward button that speeds up the action or the fact you can only upgrade towers outside of battle. The levels are challenging, some people complain too challenging in an effort to make you spend money. So it may suffer from the freemium model of gaming. There is a wealth of content in each game with over 70 levels which is great for a free game.

The third in the series is actually based around a more fantasy setting – and may be better suited as a Kingdom Rush clone.

Although it is a good series, it does suffer from pay to win elements like a lot of freemium games, which include Facebook sharing, adverts, and challenging levels that require money for upgrades or special items.

Is a tower defense game that is related to Wizardy 101, a pretty kick-ass online role-play game styled after Harry Potter. It helps train your pets, and is fun to play if you are a fan of Wizardy 101, though not something recommended for the hard-core tower defense crowd.

So, this is the tower defense on mobile platforms section of my Venn-diagram. I’ve purposely left off reviews of plant-based and zombie like tower-defense for a later section which will review the best games out there to fill that void. Games like Plants Versus Zombies Garden Warfare

Plants Versus Zombies Modern Warfare is a first-person co-operative shooter based off the tower defense game of the same name. It transfers most of the elements of the classic tower defense game and drops them into the world of a multiplayer shooter. It’s an idea that shouldn’t quite work. I mean how are you going to turn a pea shooter that is literally rooted into the ground into an action hero?! Although it would be a shooter game that would appeal to many turn based players.

Somehow it defies all the rules of the universe and all my sarcastic little comments. It doesn’t just work, it is almost a masterpiece. The levels offer enough fun, madness and mayhem to make it one of those games that are hard to put down. The mechanics are simple, easy to pick up and play with little explanation. And there is always something new to unlock or level up giving you new play experiences and a reason to return. Well the first game at least, I won’t dwell too much on the sequel where characters were locked under walls of RNG and some of the characters were a little unbalanced.

Who knew running down a street as a ray gun wielding zombie whilst engaging a jet to leap onto a house roof top would be so fun? Don’t even get me started on my Zen Cactus…

Finding a game that is similar to it though is extremely tricky. Most first-person shooters have this silly notion of presenting their games with a verisimilitude that limits the crazy and quite mad antics of this game. To be honest it is a pretty surreal game, and that surrealism is hard to replicate. As a consequence most games seem to restricted in the insane powers, and characters you can choose to play.

The game has two main modes, campaign where you play cooperatively with other team members to defend a garden from waves of zombies and the much more fun multiplayer where your team faces off against another. There is also a huge amount of collectibles for you to unlock, and play with. As there is a huge focus on multiplayer aspect and a team-based element this is going to be the main focus of the recommendations in this list.

This game for me has four key aspects, the focus it places on team-base multiplayer tactics, the surreal crazy fun aspect and the first-person shooter. So, without further ado here are a selection of multiplayer first-shooters that may appeal to fans.

Team-Base Mutli-player Shooters Like Plants Versus Zombie

Overwatch

(PC – PS4 – Xbox One)

Overwatch is the best co-op style first person shooter game on the market. It’s the only game where you can make a statement like that and have it be more fact than opinion. That’s how good it is. Blizzard has taken co-operative gaming and team work to the next level with this title and in this aspect, it is better than Plant Versus Zombies Garden Warfare. In fact, if a entertaining multiplayer shooting game is what your looking for then stop reading this article right now, and go out and buy this game now.

Overwatch is a lot like Plants Versus Zombies Warfare because it isn’t too grounded within reality, there is are powers and guns that come straight out of a Batman comic. This gives it the same creative feel that flies into the face of reality and spits in its eye. Although the surreal element is not on the same level as Plants Versus Zombies Warfare it is still really fun and gives rise to unique powers such a freeze ray. Anyone else imagine they are playing as Dr Freeze’s attractive niece?

There are even characters that have defense tower aspects because they build turrets. As there are a lot of crazy powers floating around there is also a wide range of characters to select and play as. These characters belong to a class to such as defenders or attackers which gives the player a huge versatility to play style. Each character is built extremely well with an interesting backstory too.

So, Over watch hits a lot of the criteria I’ve set out. It is focused on co-op, there are heavy defensive elements, it has a lot of fun and unique powers to play with and there are a vast number of characters to choose from and stuff to level up. It is child friendly, easy to pick up and learn how to play. The only downside is that Plants Versus Zombies Warfare is slight more casual than Overwatch. The heighten cooperative play maybe too much for more casual gamers.

Truthfully, Overwatch would be the first choice in most of the categories below.

Team Fortress 2

(PC )

Team Fortress is just exactly what it sounds. It is a multiplayer game where your team has to defend a fortress. Players form a group of four to defend a position on the map. There may not be as many players as on Plants Versus Zombies Garden Warfare map but it is just as fun. Most multiplayer games that have some form of defensive first-player action that has taken inspiration for this free to play title – Overwatch included. Blizzard has openly credited this game as being a source of motivation for their creation.

As team fortress is a free to play game it means that it is not as polished or as good graphically as Plants Versus Zombies Garden Warfare. The game is old too, and is supported on the older consoles such as Xbox 360 which compounds the issues above. Despite all of this it still offers a fun and experience. It’s a great way to meet new people who share a love of first person shooters or to kick back with friends on the weekend. Although cartoon oreinted in appearance it move set is a little more realistic than others on this list.

The characters you can play as are a little generic in origin as well. There is nothing special about them that will make you come back for more of them. All classes play extremely well, and the game is simply minded find. It’s a game I highly recommend sinking a few hours into, especially if you’re between major titles and looking for some cheap entertainment.

Comedic Multiplayer Games

Borderlands: The Handsome Jack Collection

(PS4 – Xbox One)

Borderlands: The Handsome Jack Collection is compilation of Borderlands: The Prequel Sequel and Borderlands 2 for PS4 and Xbox One. Borderlands allows a drop-in, drop-out fun cooperation play in the main campaign that is totally casual and really fun to play if you have mates over for a few beers. Gaming needs to offer more split screen co-op. It does have multiplayer options too, but it’s true fun is in the couch sharing cooperative. It supports up to a four person local co-op.

There are a few characters to play in Borderlands and each character is well developed with a range of different playing abilities. They usually encapsulate some idea of role-playing class, like a big damage absorbing tank or a damage dealing assassin. The game has a fantastic and funny script if you like the typical stoner style of comedy. And it is this script that makes it a fantastic game to enjoy and share with friends. The graphics are presented as stylish cartoon but it has to be noted it is not a child friendly title. The humor does revolve around adult concepts and it also contains taboo language.

The game play is different from Plant Versus Zombies Warfare as it is not a team defense game, but more of a straight first-person shooter. It does possess the same sense of fun and fantastic abilities and weapons. As well as well thought out characters with great abilities. It’s actually one of my favorite series.

Earth Defense Force 4.1

(PS4 – PC)

In Earth Defense Force you basically play through a Japanese monster movie. You fight your way through overwhelming waves of giant insects whilst listening to badly delivered one liners that make little to no sense but are so funny you’ll find yourself repeating them. It’s like a really low budget Star Ship Troopers, which itself is a frightening thought. It is one of those games that are funny, but you’re not sure if it is supposed to be funny. I love the whole classic B movie trope so its a game I really enjoyed.

There is little story to the game and you are just dropped into the middle of the unrelenting swarms. The controls are very easy to pick and learn. There is a split screen co-op option where your friends can join in the fun and help you fight through the swarms of enemies. It’s the kind of mindless fun that I crave after a hard days work or after that five hour exam. It is one those games that just sucks you in and keeps you playing until three in the morning. I love that this is the games own promotional video advertise it dropping frame-rates in such a wonderful manner:-

It is just so unashamedly bad it is amazing. Be warned, the voice acting might be a little better in the video than in game. If you think that’s great you should checkout some of the Japanese trailers for the fifth game. I wouldn’t be surprised to see fan based satirical B-movies arising from game-play videos and voice-overs Red vs Blue style.

There are no defense elements like Plant Versus Zombies Garden Warfare, but it has the same fun attitude. It has a great overwhelming large waves of enemies and this is similar to Plants Versus Zombies Garden Warfare’s main campaign. The map can easily become a typhoon of madness and destruction too, as your gun fire destroys a building or the ants launch a citizen into the stratosphere.

EDF! EDF! EDF! Come on, you know you want to.

Zombie Based Multiplayers Games

Killing Floor 2

(PC -PS4)

Killing Floor 2 is a 6-player co-op zombie slaughtering game that allows you to play as a team of soldiers or the zombies themselves. This game is a gore fest – the developers have boosted about their new gore system that allows you to obliterate zombies, allowing you to maim them in twenty-two different ways. If you don’t like gore, don’t go near this game.

There are a variety of classes to play, such as medic, commando, fire bug are just a few on the list. There are also perks for you to unlock and a whole arsenal of weapons for you to use. It also has a great melee system – I absolutely love how the katana feels and plays. The community is great and extremely supportive which provides a lot of custom maps for you to play and explore in addition to the official maps released with the game.

Although ultra-violent it has the same play style as Plants Versus Zombies. As the waves get bigger your ammo dwindles and it descends into an uncoordinated maelstrom of chaos where everyone is fending for their-selves, and it’s this chaos that makes the game fun.

Left 4 Dead 2

(PC)

The Left 4 Dead series of games are a cooperative multiplayers that takes place in a zombie apocalypse. There are a few classes to play in each game, as you undertake campaigns. The number of campaigns available are a limited but play-through the campaign can change dramatically depending on the skill level of cooperative players and the enemies encountered. There are various tactics and ways to play which provide great replay value.

The cooperative play will be a little different from Plants Versus Zombies Warfare because it doesn’t always revolve around protecting or defending a structure. The zombies are more realistic and based in horror rather than being cartoon like and fun. This is a game that is for adults’ due to the blood and horror involved. If you are looking for cooperative game for children it maybe better to try those listed in the first section.

The character classes in this game are not as numerous or in depth as the other games, and the abilities and skills used are not as fun graphically, or as silly. Despite this it can still be an enjoyable game to play. It is a game that will get everyone working together, and were people having different levels of skill simulates, and even enhances the experience it sets out to reproduce.

Miscreated

I only going to briefly mention this one as it’s something I’ve heard about but not play. Miscreated is a game that is still in development that you can get early access to through Steam. Despite the fact it is still in production, it has created something of a buzz on Discord. If you want to play a zombie survivor game that fulfills the promises that Dayz made this might be worth a play. I’d recommend reading some of the reviews too, some of them read like novels:-

There are a lot of team-based multiplayer shooters out there at the moment that are child friendly and have comic book style powers due to Overwatch’s success. There are a wide range of first-person shooters that offer co-operative play that I haven’t mentioned like GTAV’s Heist system or Pay Day 2 mainly due to them being a more classical representation of reality without any fantasy generic elements like ray-guns or zombies. There are also a wide range of cooperative games that aren’t shooters, like Portal 2 which always rates highly on comparison lists to Plants Versus Zombies Warfare. This section explores tower defense games that are so similar to plants vs zombies that they could be considered Clones. This section is for those of you who are just contrary and want to oppose something. Or maybe you argue against everything that is ever said. We’ve all had girlfriends like that. Choose a side and let your opposing nature run wild. This is the sections that has the closest game-play mechanics to Plants Versus Zombies and maybe the best area for games that have simple mechanics and child friendly content.

Trolls Versus Vikings One and Two

(iOS – Android)

Trolls versus Vikings is pretty much what it sounds. Trolls that battle Vikings. This operates pretty much like Plant versus Zombies, so much so the biggest complaint is that it is a clone and offers nothing original despite changing the very nature of the things battling. How are trolls anything like plants?! They hang around under bridges all day posting inflammatory material on any forum they are not currently banned from. They don’t have any contact with sunlight at all. They definitely aren’t rooted in the local community.

Despite the clone accusation both games are fun, there are a huge amount of characters, enemies and levels to play through. The game does suffer from some in app purchasing but it isn’t to the scale where the game is impossible to play without. There is a lot of content, spread across the two games. And as this section is all about those people that like to be contrite, and argumentative there is an added bonus that they get to play as a troll. Win – Win.

This is a good alternative to Plants Versus Zombies as it checks a lot of the boxes. It’s a line defense system, it has simple games mechanics that are easy to pick up, and it is child friendly with great graphics.

Ninja Cats vs Samurai Dogs

(iOS – Android)

Ninja Cats versus Samurai Dogs is a great tower defense game that is a little wacky. It also manages to avoid any comparison to Plants Versus Zombies despite having a very similar playing style which is a plus.

There are a good amount of customization throughout, and it is a pretty fun game to play. It allows you to pick the side you wish to fight on – so its satisfying for both cat and dog people. Though if you’re a dog ninja person then this game fails in the most epic of ways. We all know they exist. We’ve all seen Naruto. As much as the game is fun, it’s not the sort of game that will grab your attention for long, nor does it have a lot of replay value.

A funny idea for a game, but its execution is slightly lacking. It just doesn’t seem to be as fun as it should be. Plus no zombies or plants.

Toys vs Nightmares

Toys vs Nightmares is another direct clone of Plants versus Zombies that scores highly. It can be accessed for free online through a number of sites but I’d recommend Armour Games. I find their site safe, and pretty non-intrusive. Plus they have a wide-range of free games you can play, and one of them is Kingdom Rush. Just make sure your Flash plug-in is up to date before visiting the site.

The mechanics of the game may not be as polish as Plant versus Zombies but it is still enjoyable to play. You choose a toy from the toy box, place it on the level and let the defense begin. It is really that simple to pick up and play. It has fantastic graphics and animations I really enjoy looking at. It is super child friendly too, the concept is rooted in something they can understand. Toys.

Another great game-play style clone, that lacks the thematic aspects such as plants, zombies and humor. But as far as similar and simplistic game-play goes it is one of the best.

Fish vs Pirates

(iOS – Android)

Fish versus Pirates is very similar to Plants Versus Zombies in game-play. It is a free game so it does suffer from aspect of freemium game.

You take the role of the fish and place fish across rows to defend yourself against the encroaching attack of the pirates. There are a good number of levels to play through and a range of tactics that you can deploy to progress through the game. And a lot of content to keep you interesting and busy. It is a very typical Plants Versus Zombies clones that is set in an under-water world. It is a very child friendly game as well.

A good substitute for Plants Versus Zombies in terms of game-play, but lacks both the plants and the zombies.

Baseball Versus Zombies

(Android)

Baseball versus Zombies merges baseball players with the zombie apocalypse. I don’t know what it is about this this game but it kind of just makes me laugh. I can’t help but envision Major League merge with Zombie Land. It’s not really a tower defense but more of an action side scroller with elements of tower defense. I was just running out of things to say about tower games.

You buy buildings and players, and have them face the hordes of oncoming zombies. They are armed with bats and balls depending on the position they play on the team. You can even send cheerleaders headlong into the encroaching zombies herd. Why wouldn’t try the game just for that? There is nothing astounding or ground breaking in the game play or graphics. It’s very typical and generic kind of game. It just makes me laugh.

It does have zombies, is a bit of crazy idea but no plants and lacks the polish and greatness of Plants Versus Zombies.

Conclusion

There are some great and totally weird versus games out there that follow the game-play pattern of Plants versus Zombies. In fact, this section tends to follow the gaming pattern much closer than the other sections – which is slightly weird. So if it is the game mechanics your looking for, and nothing else this might be the section for you. Here are some more examples of versus games, though some will suffer from freemium ads and in app purchases. A lot of them contain zombies.

It’s hard to find games like Plants Versus Zombies. A game that can fill the chasm of yearning left by such a satisfactory experience.

I know, I’ve tried.

I’ve watched over fifty YouTube videos.

I’ve trawled through what seems like a thousand recommendation lists and I’m still struggling to find something that provides everything that Plants Versus Zombies did.

But without further ado, here is the best recommendations that I have found so far.

I decided the only way to find a game worthy of being a Plant Versus Zombie successor is by tearing Plants Versus Zombies apart and organizing it into its core components.

Tower defenses that are like Plants VS Zombies on Consoles /PC

This section is for those of you who want to take Plants Versus Zombies into the next generation or don’t own a mobile phone. You could be mobile phone Amish or have the long standing belief the pocket sized processors attached to a touch screen device will be the genesis of sky-net – and nobody wants to lose two hours of their life to yet another Terminator sequel.

This section will look at those tower defense games that are just too much for a mobile too handle and will bring Plants Versus Zombies to the big screen. So, if it is simplicity is what you’re looking for, this section is most probably not for you.

Aegis of Earth : Protonovus Assault

(PS – VITA-PS3- PS4 – Steam)

Aegis of Earth is a manga style tower defense game with a literal twist.

What it’s about:

You are defending a futuristic and perfectly circular city from an invasion of rampaging monsters. The city is compromised of interlocking circles on which you can build weapons or resource generators. You can rotate these circles to aim your weapons at the charging monsters and protect the city from harm. It must play havoc with the road system.

(1Could you imagine popping to the shop to pick up a pint of milk to discover your home has been rotated to the other end of the city?!)

It’s a classic B movie of a game, that is cheap but extremely good fun to play. In its own right as a PS4 title it is mediocre at best but judged as a tower defense game it is top-tier, maybe one of the best.

The assaults on your city can get very fast paced and frantic and require you to think fast and develop on the fly strategies.

As twists on the tower defense genre go this is a solid gold one.

The rotating city provides some really good and unique game-play as you are constantly refocusing your line of fire and questioning the optimum placement of the guns. There is a rich development system you can sink points into with loads of customization options. There are also elements of city management where you have to manage power requirements and the happiness of the population.

Space Run Galaxy

(PC – Steam)

Space Run Galaxy is a tower defense game set in the deep void of space.

Your spaceship is the area you have to defend by building towers on it. In Space Run Galaxy, the objective is to deliver cargo to from point A to point B without having the pirates steal your cargo. The main objective is how fast you can deliver your cargo, without the pirates stealing it.

Each mission has set three speed goals to beat that give you an additional reward.

You will have to re-visit levels to beat the top speed goal with higher level equipment.

What it’s about:

Your ship is comprised of hexagons on which you can put different towers such as shields, thrusters, guns and the cargo that you are delivering and as such it soon become extremely tactical where you are juggling the placement defensive and offensive capabilities against the profitability of the mission.

There are three main factors to juggle: speed to meets the levels time targets, guns to deter the pirates, and cargo amount to keep your business contacts happy.

The ship has a wide range of customization, you can paint it as well as place more hexagons on it and by doing so redesign its’ shape.

The real fun thing about this game is that it has a crafting system for the towers. The crafting system is really deep in this game and allows you to build more hexagons or craft better towers. So, the more missions that you complete and the greater amount of material you gather the greater amount of towers you can build or upgrade.

It is a great and fun game. Small warning, although a great defense game with a nice story, it plays nothing like Plants Versus Zombies.

I love zombies. There are a lot of people that love all things zombie. And as such there is an amazing amount of zombie related games that are just bizarre.

Here I’ll just focus on tower defense games, but the extended article will list some interesting zombie games that are not tower defenses.

Zombie City Defense Two

(iOS – Android – Steam)

Zombie City Defense is an in depth tactical tower defense organised around keeping a city safe from zombie infestation.

What it’s about:

You can research new units and you can fully customize the map – by destroying anything on it if you have the right unit. Is there a bridge that is too convenient for the zombies to cross? Then blow it up! If there is a building you just don’t like, then demolish it.

It is a great tower defense game featuring zombies but it lacks the sense of fun and cartoon graphics of Plants Versus Zombies. It comes across as a little too serious and deep in comparison.

Last Hope – Tower Defense

(iOS – Android – PC – Steam)

In Last Hope you join a war against the zombies in an open world environment. There are multiple heroes to choose from and a wide range of towers for you to build to protect yourself.

What it’s about:

Across the 140 levels you will face off not just against the zombie hordes but other survivors who are have turned to raiding and pillaging to survive.

The graphics are beautiful but they are more realistic than Plants Versus Zombies. It is more reminiscent of the gritty survival horror stories like The Walking Dead. Although that isn’t a bad thing in itself, it is when you compare it to the tone of Plants versus Zombies. The two are almost opposite tones.

Funny tower defense games that are Like Plant Versus Zombies

Here are some of the zaniest and funniest tower defense games I can find.

OTTTD

(iOS – Android – Steam)

OTTTD stands for over the top tower defense and that is exactly what it is.

What it’s about:

Galactic peace has been achieved and the coffers of mercenary groups are growing low – so they open a dimensional rift and go to war in another dimensions. It is as insane as it sounds. It has some of the most incredible and memorable enemies to battle, such as a ghostly cactus.

There are a number of hero classes you can choose from, multiple paths for the customization of the towers, there are loads of enemies to encounter and combat; so pretty much everything that you would expect from a typical defense tower. It also has a great story that is jam-packed with over the top spoof like humor.

Jelly defense

(iOS – Android)

Jelly defense, much like Plants Versus Zombies, is a tower defense game that marches to the sound of its own drum.

It is so unique it’s almost wrong to try and compare it to other tower defense games. Not because the tower defense elements are amazing but because it is more a work of art than it is a game.

What it’s about:

You should see the cut scenes. They are jaw-dropping.

It is like Plants versus Zombies because it’s so very unique and is almost incomparable to other tower defense games on the market.

However, it has no plants or zombies within it and other than being beautiful it offers little of a unique playing style.

Plant-based tower defense games at are like Plants Versus Zombies

This section is for those of you who like the plant aspect of the game.

Personally, if I liked the whole planting mechanic, I’d try Farm Simulator. I’m waiting for Farm Simulator to develop a post nuclear apocalypse add-on so I can raise two headed cows and build turrets to protect my farm against raiding outlaws and angry super mutants… wait, isn’t that Falllout 4? Who knew?

Here are the top tower defense games featuring plants. Truthfully this section seems to suffer from a lot of clones of Plant Versus Zombies that are very poorly done for quick cash grabs. As there are very few games worth playing in this category there is no expansion article elsewhere.

Sorry plant lovers, I have failed you.

Mushroom Wars One and Two

(PS4 – Xbox One – iOS – Android)

The sequel to Mushroom Wars will be released later this year across multiple platforms. In Mushroom Wars Two the developers are promising us four solo campaign maps, one for each tribe Mushroom tribe that exists. And a huge focus on multiplayer maps.

What it’s about:

Mushroom towers are built to devastate mushroom people as you move large units of them around that map. Mushroom Wars Two looks like it will take the graphics the next level and these battles will take place in a lush environment. The graphics are pretty amazing and beautiful to look at.

Mushroom Wars one is currently available although graphically it doesn’t compare in the least to the screenshots released for Mushroom Wars Two. Both however lack any zombie aspect to the game.

Garden Rescue and Garden Rescue Christmas Edition

(iOS – Android – Steam)

Garden Rescue is a tower defense game where you have to defeat bugs that threaten your garden through plant based weaponry. It is a fun, colorful game that is easy to master and play. The towers have loads of upgrades, there is detailed information about everything in the game and it is really cheap.

It is a good solid defense tower game with a good deal of content.

The biggest complaints about Garden Rescue, ironically, are that it’s trying too hard to be Plant Versus Zombie, and does so without bring anything new to the genre. The second biggest is that there are no story aspects to it whatsoever. Due to this people find it hard to carry on through the game. There is nothing driving them forward. But this shouldn’t be too much of an issue if you love defense tower games.

No zombies, and may be too much of a clone for you to bear. I personally find the comparisons a little unfair, as this game used the more typical route to protect system whereas Plants Versus Zombies has a line defense system.

This is the best rip off of Plants versus Zombies in this section.

There are a lot of other clones are listed below. These have terrible, absolutely awful reviews. I’d give them a wide-berth.

Conclusion

There are very few games that meet all the criteria of Plants Versus Zombies as it is such a unique game.

I hope at least some of the games, and categories we explored, has been a help to you in your quest to find some games like plants vs zombies.

What I found interesting was that certain categories had similar failings for an alternative – zombie base tower defense games where more geared to an adult audience, were more likely to have guns and be humorless, with more complex controls. Comedic and Zany ones were more like to fun graphically or story-wise but they were mostly derivative of the genre. Plant-based ones just sucked ass on a colossal sack – with the exception of Mushroom Wars. And versus were more likely to be line defense and have simple kid friendly materiel.

How weird is that?

Top Ten Gaming Trends 2017

The game industry is growing at an exceptional rate in all kinds of areas. This is going to be a major year in gaming where developing trends, such as eSport and streaming are going to effect how games are designed and played. Here is a breakdown of the major trends in gaming to look out for.

1). Virtual Reality

The VR revival started in 2016 and looks set to continue into 2017. Adoption rate of VR was fairly slow in 2016 because of the cost of both the headset that where available and the computers that can run them. A lot of the experiences were not that great either with one notable exception. The success of Resident Evil Seven has gone a long way to showcase just what VR is capable of, and with a few more successful entries like this the adoption rates could increase. However, it does little to mitigate the costs factor.

Due to this many analyst predict that VR in the consumer game industry will receive little to no love for game developers, and they will not sell enough units to cover the cost. VR is currently too expensive for mainstream gaming.

Developers may move away from consumer VR in gaming to other areas such as training sims.

2.) Streaming

Next Generation console, more powerful PCs, and Twitch has made streaming game extremely easy. There is going to be a raise in the number of games that have eSport following due to the easy accessibility of stream, and there are going to be more channels dedicated to it.

The main trend in streaming is going to focus on Participatory streaming. Updates to the streaming model will allow greater interaction between the streamers and their audience changing the way games are played and watched. This update will provide streamers with real-time stat over-lays, gameplay pools to give audience control, and wagers through loyalty points. So, streams will become more interactive for the audience.

3). eSports.

Viewership of e-sports as risen drastically from 204 million to 292 million 43% increase over two years. eSports are getting more popular, and as such there is greater investment in this area. To an extent this has already been seen as Counter-Strike, Over-Watch and Street Fighter V matches have been broadcasted on television. Broadcasting rights for league of legends sold to major league baseball streamer for $300 million. And projection suggest that the industry will double its value to $1 billion with a viewership of 500 million fans.

The most interesting trend in eSports over the next year may be made by Blizzard who are shaking up that way eSports are organised with their Overwatch league. Blizzard envision local teams playing for major cities much like traditional sports and already have potential owners of teams bidding millions to get on board as league founders.

This new model may cause classic eSports games like League of Legend to redesign their systems.

Expect eSports to become a great influence on the design of games in the near future.

4). Downloads Numbers Rising.

Profits from downloading media are were increasing in 2016. Downloading media will continue to raise, although physical media should remain king.

5). A focus on PVP Mobile Gaming

eSports is going to have a huge effect on the mobile gaming industry too. There are an increasing number of games on the mobile platform that support streaming technology are gaining a following such as Vainglory and Hearthstone.

As streaming and eSports become more popular game designers are going to focus on increasing the appeal of their game to spectators. This may signal a move away from the asynchronous models were competition is done through a leader-board like Candy-Crush and Opponents are controlled by computer AI’s Like Marvel Puzzle Quest. To appeal to the masses and create a watching audience games will need to be fast paced and interactive. This will mean a slow move away from match 3 games and slow world builders.

There will be a bigger focus around branding in mobile games too.

Increasing game will built with this in mind.

6). Blend single and multiplayer experience

There will be an increasing trend to blend single player games with a multi-player experience. Games are increasing less seen as one off novel experiences, and are now being marketed as a ongoing service provided by the developer as it increases DLC sales. This will mean a move away from franchise like Nathan Drake where there is a rich one player setting only.

Games like Mass Effect Andromeda showcase how developers are trying to integrate the multiplayer aspect into game to prolong their life and increase their revenue streams.

7.) Expect Bigger Names in Mobile Gaming

Nintendo’s success with Pokemon Go has demonstrated that big developers and franchises not only have a role to play in mobile gaming but can expect a healthy profit from doing so. Pokemon Go caused a massive 33% spike in Nintendo’s share price.

Nintendo seem set on bringing over its favorite 1^st party titles to the mobile gaming base, releasing Fire Emblem Heroes earlier this year.

This move will attract other big names to the mobile market, and if Nintendo’s influence is anything to go by these new developers will create new ways and means to the F2P model that leave the standard models of games showing old and obvious prompts to spend that can be ignored.

8). Harassment

One of the biggest issues in the gaming community is that of player harassment, especially as games become more socially driven. The idea that harassment is just part of gaming culture has slowed down moves to create strong prevention methods.

I can see how the issue is hard to judge myself. I was in a general chat of a mobile game yesterday, when some started making rape jokes in the room. The room was divide over whether it was his right under freedom of to make the rape joke or if victims of rape had the right to exist in a space where they are free of any reminder of the abuser/event/threat.

With cyber-bullying and online attacks becoming a more prominent trend in the media expect gaming to start coming down hard on player harassment.

9). Attack of the AR clones

With the Success of Pokemon’s go Augmented reality expect a lot of unsuccessful clones later this year that will try and emulate Nintendo’s success with the model.

10). The death of 4 year console cycle.

With the release of Project Scorpion by Microsoft a lot of people are saying the 4 year cycle of new console release is dead, and an updated version of the same console with better technology will be the norm going forward.

Wizard 101 : A child safe card summoning MMORPG

Wizard101 is a refreshing change from the majority of MMORPG’s out there. It uses a card based summoning system in combat, that is very easy and simple to master. The game sells itself as being a child safe zone, which could explain its extremely imaginative, really funny, and simple to play yet remains fun.

Overview

In RPG terms there is only one class to choose from – Although this game offers a lot of different sub-class for you to choose from such as : Death Wizard, Life Wizard, Fire Wizard, Ice Wind, Storm Wizard and Conjuring Wizard.
Great story that starts from the tutorial with a central death wizard bad guy.
Lots of quests that are easy to find and complete, giving you a lot of equipment and cards.
A card based summoning combat system that is very different
Parties that are formed automatically on the field dungeon.
Lots of literary references, so far I’ve met Dorothy, Tin-man, Toto and penny dreadful.
Great for kids – it’s almost like Harry Potter Online.
Imaginative characters and graphics.
All text is full narrated – storybook fashion.

Character Selection

Class wise you have to be a wizard. Kind of makes sense from the title huh? But it does offer you a lot of diversity around what wizard you want to be. Interestingly, the school of wizardry you belong to is more interactive than simply choosing a school. You are asked a set of seemingly random questions, that selects the best school of wizardry for you – like a digital sorting hat. Here is a video of my entry test:-

Yeah, not to surprising the goth was placed into the death school, is it? But it reflects well on the tests abilities. And in typical goth fashion I thought I’d try and subvert the mainstream stereotypical options by giving my death mage a health tan and a bright red robe with yellow trim that lasted until my first equipment drop.

Later you can train in a second school of wizardry too – I oddly choose life magic, just because of the teacher:-

Another interesting feature is the name selection process, you don’t get to select your name but it is comprised of random words that you can slot together or press random to jiggle about. I have included a few random selections on the video above – I just kind of feel in love with the name Johnathan Legendpants though. I just couldn’t help but imagine my character doing a Thor like bellow :- “ Beware of my legendary pants.”

Although this does limit freedom it does also make the game more child friendly as there are no user names that haven’t been preordained – and is a novel and interesting system to filter out the unfriendly user names. Plus I legandpants… two words that I’d never put together but seems to make me infinitely happy.

Storyline

The story line is there from the get go. You are new student attending wizard university and even before your enrollment is over the headmaster is attacked by a more stereotypical Death Mage – Black robes, dark eye bags, and a bad attitude. Before you know it the Headmaster has thrust you into a dual with the Death Wizard and talks you through the basic of the dueling and card summoning system and then send you on a journey to clear unicorn alley of undead creatures – without even asking for a signed permission slip.

You get to meet a lot of very interesting characters both graphically and story-line wise that range from classical film characters from the Wizard of Oz to storm wielding toads, fairy queens, Bear Merchants (that is a merchant that happens to be a bear not someone who sells bears), a gnarly Death study that sounds like he would rather be surfing, dude and the worlds tiniest smiths – amongst others.

Gameplay

This game is designed to be child friendly, and as even the most basic of concepts are explained in great detail, and with an array of brightly colored icons. So, it is a very good game for beginners or children. The user interface is simple and easy to use.

The combat is fun and simple. It basically amounts to you choosing a card to play or summon by clicking on it, but like all deck building games there is an element of strategy to creating it, such as enemy debuffs, summoning cost, self-health/duffs and treasure cards. Although there are more strategic and tactical games out there for this such as Magic: The Gathering or the online card game Eredan iTCG both of these lack the RPG element. Parties are formed almost automatically as you travel the map, entering an existing duel of anyone that you happen to wander too close too. Although this can be annoying as you’ve been dragged into a battle accidentally, it is a life saver when dueling some of the harder creatures on the map when you’re under leveled. All the sidewalks in an area are free from enemy encounters too, so any battle is easily avoidable.

Quests also vary a lot in design. Some required you to defeat a specific number of enemies, whilst others ask you to free sprites from cages, find people hidden on maps or look for lost items.

There are a range of mini-games that you can access from the fairiegrounds, that are simplistic but fun if you get tired of adventuring and want to play something else.

You also have your own dorm room, which you gain items for and can decorate with them.

Community

It is a busy and friendly community. In the two hours I was in the game I received over ten friend requests, without really talking to anyone (with the safe game for children emphasis I was afraid they’d all be ten).

There is a world chat as well as lots of icons and emojis for you to use for some quick thanks, or hi during battle.

Graphics

Technically they are slightly above average – but they are fun and convey a real sense of character in the people that you meet as well as providing interesting environments to explore. You can tell a lot of love has gone into the design of the areas from the details of pictures on the wall. What is that? Is it a monkey in a uniform?!

The battles are very stimulating visually too, as not only do the enemies look great but so do your summons.

Conclusion

A fun game, lots to laugh at and very imaginative. Is a great game for children, with lots of features to keep kids safe online, like locked chat until they’re 13, no user-names that are not pre-approved, and a chat filtering system. Really great if you’re a childish adult like me too.
